When playing in an online casino money changes "hands" frequently. At times it can be quite a lot of money. It is reasonable that some people have concerns about safety. Here's what you need to know about security with regard to your online gaming account.

There are two main concerns people have relating to their online casino funds. Can they be stolen directly and can they be lost due to some kind of fraud (cheating)?

The short answer to question one is no. The reason new online gaming sites are cropping up all the time is not because people are looking to steal a bunch of money and disappear. These sites are a huge cash cow and the people who back them are making plenty of money without having to rob you. It would be very bad business for any of these sites to risk their reputations by trying to make anyone's money "disappear."

The question then becomes are you playing at one of these reputable sites that doesn't need to rob you, or some fly by night operation that may collapse at a moment's notice? It's not hard to find out. For one, these casinos are all required to have gaming licenses, and to be able to present proof of such licenses. At any legitimate site, you will find a link (usually under the "about us" tab) that will give you information about a site's licensing, its encryption software (the thing that prevents computer whizzes from "hacking" into your game), and various regulatory and watchdog groups that approve the site. Many sites will have links to their regulatory and watchdog affiliations on the home page.

You can also ask around. There are plenty of people playing casino games online these days, and you can gather information, either live or on the Internet, to help you decide which sites are the most reputable.

The second issue is whether you can be cheated in some way. Again the short answer is no. These casinos already have a legal way of "cheating." It's called their edge. The casino can expect a profit related to their volume of players without tinkering with the software in any way. To do so would risk their reputation and threaten to reduce or destroy that player volume. A good site would never even dream of it.

Some players feel like some sites are rigged because they win a huge amount and then cannot win for a long time. They feel the site has somehow "locked down" their account so that they can't win anymore. This is completely ludicrous. Statistically over the course of a lifetime of play, players will undergo numerous extended winning and losing streaks. Because the amount of play is sped up online, these streaks come around much more often than in live play, leading to suspicion for some superstitious players. There is no basis to it. None.

As far as online poker, it is possible for two players at a table to communicate without your knowledge ("collusion"). However each site keeps very detailed records of every hand, and if you seriously suspect collusion, you should report it to the site. They will analyze the way the hands were played and determine if there were colluders. If these players are caught, they will be banned from the site.

In general, online gaming is quite safe, and you have little to worry about. Any fears you may have should be easily allayed by a quick scan of the site's licensing and regulatory history.
